In recent years, numerous incidents have occurred in various countries, including our republic. A correspondent from Podrobno.uz has compiled a selection of the most notable cases.
One such incident took place just days ago in Brazil. In the city of Marica, a traditional 56-meter "floating" Christmas tree was being installed on the water. However, strong winds knocked the structure down during the preparatory works. As a result of the pursuit of uniqueness, one person lost their life, and there were also injuries.
This is not Brazil's first occurrence of such an event. In 2018, a 120-meter tree collapsed during installation in the northern part of the country, resulting in four fatalities. The festive artificial tree aimed to secure a spot in the Guinness World Records as the tallest.
In Colombia, on December 16 of this year, a 30-meter tree fell and crushed a young police officer on the day of its inauguration. This happened immediately after the festive lights were turned on. The 19-year-old succumbed to his injuries in the hospital. The tree was subsequently removed.
Last year in Belgium, a 63-year-old woman visiting a Christmas market became a victim of a falling tree. Two other individuals were injured as a result of the incident.
Another unfortunate event occurred in 2017 in the Guatemalan town of El Carmen Frontera on the border with Mexico. Four people, aged between 17 and 24, died when the tree came into contact with a high-voltage line while decorating it.
In Uzbekistan, Christmas trees have also been the cause of incidents. In 2023, a decorated tree fell in the Karakul district of the Bukhara region due to strong wind gusts.
In 2022, a New Year's tree caught fire in Jizzakh due to violations of fire safety regulations.
Several incidents occurred in 2020: in Navoi and Fergana, New Year's trees burned down, while in Termez, one was toppled by strong winds.
In 2019, the main symbol of the holiday burned down in Kokand. At that time, many media outlets reported that the tree may have been set on fire. However, this information was later refuted, with a short circuit being identified as the cause of the fire.
In 2018, a fire broke out while installing a New Year's tree in the capital's "Lokomotiv" park. The cause of the fire was attributed to faulty garlands decorating the tree. Many humorously noted that the phrase "One, two, three – the little tree is on fire!" took on a new meaning.
Fortunately, each of these incidents occurred without casualties. We hope that this year, nothing will mar one of the main holidays, and it will proceed without any incidents.
Let us remind you that recently, in the center of the capital, in the square in front of the Alisher Navoi National Library, the country's main New Year's tree was installed.
