In Istanbul, Turkey, a symposium is taking place to commemorate the 550th anniversary of the death of the prominent legal scholar, mathematician, and astronomer Ali Kuschi, renowned as the "Ptolemy of his time." The event is organized with the support of the Turkish Academy of Sciences, Istanbul Technical University, and the University of Culture.
Attending the event are Mehmet Fatih Kacir, the Minister of Industry and Technology of the Republic of Turkey, Istanbul Province Governor Davut Gül, President of the Turkish Academy of Sciences Muzaffer Şeker, as well as scholars who have conducted research related to the works of Ali Kuschi.
The symposium also features presentations from Firdaus Abdukhodikov, Director of the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and Bahrom Abduhalimov, Vice President of the Academy of Sciences of Uzbekistan.
– The language, religion, traditions, customs, and history of the Uzbek and Turkish peoples stem from common roots. Our cultural heritage also contains many similar traits. Thanks to the initiatives of the esteemed President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, the friendly relations between the two countries continue to strengthen. In particular, our cultural and educational ties are also rapidly developing, – noted Firdaus Abdukhodikov, Director of the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan and the World Society for the Study, Preservation, and Promotion of Uzbekistan's Cultural Heritage (WOSCU).
– It should be noted that WOSCU is conducting extensive work on studying the legacies of great scholars. For instance, a facsimile copy of the manuscript of As-Sufi's "Book of Fixed Stars," which is preserved in the library of France and was reworked and rewritten in Ulugh Beg's astronomical school, has been published. Recently, our member, Turkish colleague, Professor Emek Uşenmez from Istanbul University, reported that a manuscript in the Turkic language belonging to the son of the great scholar Ali Kuschi has been discovered.
We propose to hold a continuation of the symposium dedicated to the life and work of the great scholar Ali Kuschi in 2025 in Samarkand, where this remarkable thinker was born and raised. Furthermore, we intend to organize a forum for Turkish and Uzbek scholars. This forum will focus on the study of the cultural heritage of the Turkic world and the lives of great scholars.
The international symposium and exhibition dedicated to Ali Kuschi were organized to deeply explore the creativity and activities of the scholar, as well as to popularize them among the general public. The exhibition "From Samarkand to Istanbul: The Scientific Heritage of Ali Kuschi," which is open at the Rami Library, showcases manuscripts handwritten by Ali Kuschi, scientific books from the 15th-16th centuries, and artifacts. This exhibition provides an opportunity to learn more about the life of the great scholar.
The two-day symposium consists of 6 sessions and aims to further promote the scientific legacy of Ali Kuschi in the context of global science and Islamic civilization.
